But Is It For You?
To find out whether franchising is for you, start by asking yourself a handful of simple questions:
Have you got enough capital to buy a franchise, and if you haven't, can you raise it?
- Are you in good health? Running your own business can be stressful. Do you reckon you could handle the emotional and physical strain as well as the highs? How do you deal with pressure?
- Do you like taking risks? If you're ambitious but prefer to hedge your bets, franchising could give you the best of both worlds. Think about the level of risk you're comfortable with at this stage in your life.
- You might be thinking about starting out in business because you want to be your own boss. If so, are you prepared to give up a small amount of independence and autonomy in exchange for the comfort blanket which a franchise offers? If you're a fiercely independent entrepreneurial type (you'll know if you are), you might chafe under the operational requirements and specifications of a franchised business. If things absolutely have to be done your way, you may want to head in another direction.
- Do you enjoy working with other people or prefer being on your own? How do you feel about recruiting, training and managing employees?
- You'll need to work hard - particularly in the early stages while your business is growing. Do you have enough dedication?
