Mason's Landing Planting
The Worldwide Forest is growing.
On a rainy Sunday morning in Perth, instead of hitting the â€Ëœsnooze' button and curling up under the covers, staff from the Worldwide National Office pulled on their gumboots and went tree planting for Planet Ark's National Tree Day (27 July 2008). With the expert guidance of SERCUL (South East Region Centre for Urban Landcare) volunteers, Worldwide National Support Office staff and family members planted the first 500 trees of the Worldwide Forest at Mason's Landing on the Canning River in WA . The Worldwide team planted native sedges and paperbark trees in the wet, muddy ground â€â€œ ideal conditions for seedlings (but not for shoes!). After planting the first part of Worldwide's future 10,000-tree forest at Mason's Landing, the team moved on to a public planting area at Fleming Avenue on the Canning River. There, they joined about 100 other volunteers and SERCUL staff to plant 7,000 trees. â€Å“It was a really successful day, everything went off without a hitch,â€Â said Tom Atkinson of SERCUL. â€Å“Despite the rain, we had a good turnout and the planting was done really well. The level of care showed by all the volunteers was great.â€Â Attached Photo caption: Clear as mud: Caitlin Smith and Caitlin McGinniss from the Worldwide National Office on Tree Day. Greening Queensland Fortitude Valley and Eagle Street join in the planting on Tree Day. 170 is the sort of turnout you get at an exclusive charity dinner or a big weddingâ€Â¦ but tree planting? A surprising number of eager volunteers turned up on a damp Sunday in Brisbane to plant native trees for Planet Ark's National Tree Day at Huntington Park in Brookfield, Qld. About 15 Worldwide staffers and family members helped in the planting of over 1,500 trees. â€Å“The planting was planned to finish about 12.00pm, but there were so many volunteers that 1,500 trees were planted by about 10.15am,â€Â said Michelle. â€Å“We're lucky the rain held off on the day!â€Â Attached Photo caption: Green Range-r: National Ark Tree Day Ambassador Ranger Stacey and Worldwide Fortitude Valley Manager Michelle Bowen. |
