  Year Books Top Tips

  Year book production can be a daunting task, but a few simple steps will help you plan and achieve a final book that you can be proud of.

  If your budget allows, consider including a school DVD of important days, sporting awards, school songs, achievement awards or simple and fun student messages and images. The DVD can be inserted into a plastic sleeve and attached to the cover.

  It's important to consider timing when planning the successful launch of your year book. Identify the date the year books are to be handed out and work backwards. It's better to have some time up your sleeve and have the books arrive early than having to mail them or hand deliver them out at the end of the year.

  Consider themes - do you want a traditional 'school' design for your year book or do you want something different? Our graphic design team can assist you with your layout and will advise the best format to supply your artwork in.

  Another important consideration is the final cost of printing the year book, determine your budget at the beginning of the project. Our design and print team can assist you with pricing for different options.

  Planning the layout of the year book is essential. Pages can always be added or deleted at the end and if there are blank pages, consider a section for autographs and comments from students and teachers as well as words to the school song. Most year books are saddle stitched (2 staples on the spine) because it is the most cost effective option. The number of text pages should be divisible by 4, e.g. 24, 28, 32, 36 etc.

  A guide to yearbook layout is as follows:

  Cover - front and back (also consider if you want printing on the inside front and back cover). Title Page, Teachers and Staff Photos, Class and Student Photos, School Group Excursion photos School photos - candid photos of students in day to day activities, autographs or comments.

  Your school photographer may supply class photos and images of individual students - make sure everyone is included as some students may have been away on the day school photographs were taken. Portrait photos taken against a plain background with a good camera are best. Our Worldwide team will advise if any of your images are not suitable for print.

  Binding Options

  Year Books Binding Options

  Saddle Stitching

  A professional yet cost effective option, saddle stitched books and booklets have been stapled through the folded line of gathered sheets of paper with sturdy wire staples. Depending on the size of the book, two or more staples are passed through and clinched on the central pages. 

  We recommend choosing saddle stitching for documents with less than 64 pages, to make sure they don’t become too bulky. Our team of graphic designers will make sure to use sufficient margins on your pages, so that the finished product is easy to read and looks professional.

  
  Perfect Binding

  As the names suggests this binding technique will make sure your printed product looks picture perfect. We use a flexible and robust thermal glue on the spine to marry the cover and pages together, before trimming all the edges of the book. 

  For documents that are page heavy (more than 24 pages), perfect binding is the ideal option. Unlike our other binding techniques, printing can be done on the spine of the book to include titles and logos, and the clean, flat edges allow for neat stacking. Perfect binding is a professional and attractive option for books with a heavier, laminated cover.

  Finishing Options

  Year Books Finishing Options

  There are a number of finishing options you can use to make your year book stand out.  Why not give it that extra special look and feel with the following popular options.

  A UV Varnish is a liquid coating that is applied to the surface of a sheet which is then dried/cured under an ultra violet light. This has the effect of highlighting and drawing attention to parts of the design, but it also provides the additional visual stimulus of having varied textures on a single printed surface.

  MetalFX is a process of mixing metallic silver with a variety of process colours to give the desired effect. The process gives a metallic lustre to the printed image.

  Lamination adds a layer of protective coating either gloss or matt to the printed piece. Lamination improves the sturdiness of the piece as well as giving it a level of water resistance. If a gloss laminate is applied to the printed surface, photos and images appear to have more shine and brightness. Matt laminated prints are more subdued but add an elegant finish to the printed surface.

  Embossing and Debossing are the processes of creating either raised or recessed relief images and designs in paper and other materials. An embossed pattern is raised against the background, while a debossed pattern is sunken into the surface of the material (but might protrude somewhat on the reverse side).

  Aqueous Coating is a fast-drying, water-based, protective coating which is applied while the paper stock is on the press to achieve a finish that exceeds the quality of a varnish. This water-based finish dries quickly and is resistant to smudges and fingerprints.

  Foiling is the application of metallic or pigmented foil on to a solid surface by application of a heated die onto foil, making it permanently adhere to the surface. The foil stamp is a permanent process. Foils come in a wide selection of colours and finishes, from the most commonly used metallic gold and silver to foils with pearlescent and holographic effects.
