Yearbook Top Tips

Yearbook production can be a daunting task, but a few simple steps will help you plan and achieve a final book that you can be proud of.

#1 Budget

If your budget allows, consider including a school DVD of important days, sporting awards, school songs, achievement awards or simple and fun student messages and images. The DVD can be inserted into a plastic sleeve and attached to the cover.

#2 Timing

It's important to consider timing when planning the successful launch of your year book. Identify the date the year books are to be handed out and work backwards. It's better to have some time up your sleeve and have the books arrive early than having to mail them or hand deliver them out at the end of the year.

#3 The Creative

Consider themes - do you want a traditional 'school' design for your year book or do you want something different? Our graphic design team can assist you with your layout and will advise the best format to supply your artwork in.

#4 Final Cost

Another important consideration is the final cost of printing the year book, determine your budget at the beginning of the project. Our design and print team can assist you with pricing for different options.

#5 Layout

Planning the layout of the year book is essential. Pages can always be added or deleted at the end and if there are blank pages, consider a section for autographs and comments from students and teachers as well as words to the school song. Most year books are saddle stitched (2 staples on the spine) because it is the most cost effective option. The number of text pages should be divisible by 4, e.g. 24, 28, 32, 36 etc.

#6 Photography

Your school photographer may supply class photos and images of individual students - make sure everyone is included as some students may have been away on the day school photographs were taken. Portrait photos taken against a plain background with a good camera are best. Our Worldwide team will advise if any of your images are not suitable for print.

Yearbook Finishing Options

There are a number of finishing options you can use to make your printed Yearbooks stand out.  Why not give it that extra special look and feel with the following popular options. Ask in Centre for Finishing Effects samples. 

UV Varnish

A UV Varnish is a liquid coating that is applied to the surface of a sheet which is then dried/cured under an ultra violet light. This has the effect of highlighting and drawing attention to parts of the design, but it also provides the additional visual stimulus of having varied textures on a single printed surface.

Metal FX

Is a process of mixing metallic silver with a variety of process colours to give the desired effect. The process gives a metallic lustre to the printed image.

Lamination

Adds a layer of protective coating either gloss or matt to the printed piece. Lamination improves the sturdiness of the piece as well as giving it a level of water resistance. If a gloss laminate is applied to the printed surface, photos and images appear to have more shine and brightness. Matt laminated prints are more subdued but adds an elegant finish to the printed surface.

Embossing & Debossing

Are the processes of creating either raised or recessed relief images and designs in paper and other materials. An embossed pattern is raised against the background, while a debossed pattern is sunken into the surface of the material (but might protrude somewhat on the reverse side).

Die Cutting

Is a unique feature that can make your printed piece stand out. Die cutting is a process used to cut paper into specific shapes using a steel cutting die. Most importantly, the die cut shapes are endless and are commonly used on marketing and promotional pieces.

Foiling

Is the application of metallic or pigmented foil on to a solid surface by application of a heated die onto foil, making it permanently adhere to the surface. The foil stamp is a permanent process. Foils come in a wide selection of colours and finishes, from the most commonly used metallic gold and silver to foils with pearlescent and holographic effects.
