Design is an ever-evolving art and if you want your marketing materials to continue to perform at their best, it’s important for you to evolve right along with it. Staying on top of design trends as they change and incorporating them into your marketing is a fantastic way to ensure that your business feels relevant to your customers as time goes on.
So where should you focus your design attention in 2023? We’ve compiled a list of upcoming design trends so you can incorporate them into your designs to create powerful marketing materials that communicate well, inspire action, and get results.
Motion graphics are becoming an increasingly powerful way to reach your audience. From TikTok “shorts” to Instagram “stories” customers are becoming more and more engaged with bite-sized video content and it’s changing the way that customers relate to brands (and vice versa). Viewers engage with video and animations for far longer than they do with static images; a picture may be worth a thousand words, but, in our experience, motion graphics are worth far more.
If you’ve been paying attention the last few years you’ll know that minimalism in design has been around for a while, and minimal vintage is an off-shoot from that. Minimal vintage features the pared down design elements of the minimalist design movement and pairs it with vintage elements in the colour palette and type style that hark back to the “good old days” when things were built to last and people were motivated by passion and hard work.
Nostalgia has always been a powerful motivator and a great way to connect with your audience. Right now the “retro” style is the 90’s/early 2000’s era and there’s a heavy throwback vibe to that era in a lot of designs; think bubblegum colours, different textures, and lots and lots of geometric shapes. These kind of vibrant designs are going to be featuring heavily in designs in 2023, and will be really effective not only to a younger audience who see it as “retro-cool” but to an older audience who will respond to the nostalgia element.
Typography has always been one of the most important elements in effective design and this coming year we’ll see a lot of dynamic typography that changes the way we think about text; with quirky and expressive fonts that loop, knot and dissolve. Creative typography that forces the viewer to take a deeper look will be playing a leading role in designs throughout 2023.
OpenAI’s DALL-E 2 took the world by storm in 2022 and the artificial intelligence powered image generator has had a big impact on the design world – which we’ll see really finding its feet in 2023. Both Microsoft and Notion have incorporated the technology into their own design tools, so it’s only going to become more and more ingrained in the design world – which is a fascinating prospect. You can check out OpenAI DALL-E 2 here.
Great design allows your business to stand out from the crowd and designers are achieving that by breaking away from the norm and creating more abstract designs that break the rules and reach people in powerful new ways. Some of these conceptual design ideas include expressive typography, liquid gradients and design “brutalism”, all of which are pushing the boundaries of traditional design and as a result, are engaging audiences in a whole new way.
While it probably feels counter-intuitive, anti-branding can be an extremely effective way to convey vulnerability, relatability and authenticity to your audience. With many consumers moving away from supporting big corporations and instead showing a desire to support smaller, local businesses with “real people” at the helm. Effective anti-branding can make your business seem more approachable, less pretentious, and more motivated by genuine passion, rather than by money or success and that can be very alluring to your customer base.
